I think though like you I didn't appreciate the message in The Ugly Duckling until I was older.Vickihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14052783125623785679noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4508077744348630312.post-66130725237006174982010-07-30T22:01:56.324+01:002010-07-30T22:01:56.324+01:00I'm generally not a huge fan of fairytales, bu...I'm generally not a huge fan of fairytales, but this one is actually one of my favourites! Happiness in his stories is not just a given, one has to work hard to achieve it, or fail. <br />Yes, he is a bit depressive at times, but Andersen's stories don't pretend.Irena @ This Miss Loves to Readhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16127816068294702715noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4508077744348630312.post-83920812085300956752010-07-30T17:11:38.975+01:002010-07-30T17:11:38.975+01:00+JMJ+

If I remember correctly, Andersen didn't have a very happy childhood himself; and he certainly feels compassion for all his characters. Yet the suffering is part of what makes the endings so beautiful, isn't it? Happy endings taken to the next, transcendent level!Enbrethilielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03414765854670926854noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4508077744348630312.post-74765895796991651392010-07-30T16:10:49.960+01:002010-07-30T16:10:49.960+01:00I agree, the duckling/swan suffered way too long, ...I agree, the duckling/swan suffered way too long, but I just love the ending and the moral. (I agree with Bookworm, though, that Anderson certainly heaped the sufferings on his title character, who was, after all "just a kid" during the greater part of the story.)Enbrethilielhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03414765854670926854noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4508077744348630312.post-10208336240230511992010-07-30T14:51:08.475+01:002010-07-30T14:51:08.475+01:00I used to hate this fairy tale because the poor du...I used to hate this fairy tale because the poor duckling being teased made me feel so uncomfortable-it took too long to get to the happy ending.
