Do the seasons affect your reading?

Hello, bloggers! I have a question for you. I wanted to post something that was not a review or a meme, just for the fun of it.

So, my question is – does your reading preference change according to a particular season? Does it matter for you whether it’s winter or summer, or do you read certain genres/books only during a particular season?

I pretty much always stick to my preferred genres, but I have noticed that I read some genres much more during a particular season. In winter, I like to tackle historical mysteries, historical novels, and supernatural novels (mostly about vampires) with a gothic, tense, or intense atmosphere. This will sound weird, but I guess I read more serious novels. During winter, I also love to tackle the classics and dramas. Of course, I also read other genres, but the genres I mentioned prevail. I know that this last winter, I read a lot of Anne Rice, Charlaine Harris, Jean Plaidy, dramas (like The Book Thief by Markus Zusak) and the classics (English and American). This kind of reading begins for me in October, I think, and lasts till March or April.

Spring and summer are something else. In spring and summer, I really enjoy reading chick lit, historical romances (I opened the season with Kathleen E. Woodiwiss), YA and light fantasy and supernatural novels, with a less intense, gothic atmosphere, like Neil Gaiman and Charlaine Harris, too, actually, because her novels are written in a light way. I rarely pick up a classic during this time of year, although I do occasionally. The same goes for historical novels. The Jean Plaidy novels I have yet to read wait for me, poor deserted things, and I read other things.;)

Of course, I’ll always make an exception for a book I really want to read, and at times, I just feel like reading a particular book. But mostly, it’s how I described it.

So, is it the same for you? How/what do you read over the course of a year? Or is it that seasons don’t matter to you at all? Feel free to share your thoughts.

I've never thought about it but I think I do the same thing! For whatever reason, winter seems more serious while summer is more light. I guess it might have something to do with the weather. Most people don't want to lug around a huge classic book when they could read fun chick lit at the beach.

I find that seasons don't affect me much, as I always alternate my books: young adult, contemporary and then classics. I find that I am able to read one book right after another book this way.

While I always read a variety of genres I do tend to tackle the heavier stuff in the winter. It's when I spend more time indoors and have more time to get deep into a book or subject. I end up getting deep into political and historical non-fiction in winter. In the summer we're busy doing so much stuff and outdoors so much I read books that don't take as much time as thought, books I can put down at any time and that I can take with me. This tends to be more chick lit and fiction for me.

I always pretty much stick with the same genres year-around. Interesting topic!

I haven't thought about this.
But I don't think it affects me, excepts in the summer when I prefer to read light books as teenager chick lit....
