Friday is for Fairytales: Enchanted (movie)

Friday is for Fairytales is a meme hosted by Irena (me) at This Miss loves to Read. Every Friday, you can choose a fairytale you love, or simply find interesting or haunting, and review it or simply say why you like it so much, or why it has captured your attention. Instead of a fairytale, you can choose a favourite fairytale character and describe him/her and tell us why you like them, or you can simply share an experience connected to a fairytale. Fairytales can be old and modern, written by a known author or anonymous, written down or passed on orally, short or in novel form (like re-writings of fairytales), international or typical for your country alone. In this case, present your country’s fairytale and we can all become acquainted with a new fairytale. So, make a post every Friday that is connected to the world of fairytales, be it a review, a character description or your own fairytale experience. Let’s celebrate fairytales and share our love for them.

My post today is about: Enchanted (movie)

Enchanted is one of my favourite romantic comedies and what I love about it that it is both a romantic comedy and a modern-day fairy-tale. It is a tribute to/a parody of animated Disney movies, but I think it is mostly a witty, original tribute to Disney.

If you are not familiar with the movie, the premise is as follows: Giselle, a very typical Disney princess, is rescued by Edward, a very typical Disney prince, and they want to marry, but his evil stepmother, Queen Narissa, doesn’t want Edward to marry anyone, so she sends Giselle from the animated world of their kingdom, Andalasia, and into the modern-day New York. There, Giselle meets friends and foes, as well as true love, but Edward follows her to New York, and so things become very complicated. A love quadrangle ensues, as well as the final battle for the throne of Andalasia.

Sounds very much like Disney, doesn’t it? I am a big fan of Disney, so this movie is really perfect for me. Giselle is a really cool princess, a combination of Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Ariel and probably some other princesses as well. She is beautiful, animals are her friends, and she is a romantic to the bone. All she dreams about is meeting a prince and experiencing her true love’s kiss. Edward is the very prince that Giselle has been dreaming about. He is dashing and royal. But sometimes, your prince can come in a slightly less dashing and royal package, perhaps in the form of a divorce attorney from New York, Robert Philip. I think his name is very obvious, as the prince in Sleeping Beauty is called Philip and to top it off, it is Robert Philip who gives the sleeping/dying Giselle the kiss of true love (although the prince in Snow White does that too). The similarities with Sleeping Beauty and Snow White are strong and to me, they were the most obvious ones.

There are also a few musical numbers involved, very much in the style of Disney, with everyone just suddenly bursting into a song and dancing in the middle of park, and you have talking animals that can clean for you and help in saving your life. There is the evil nemesis in the form of Queen Narissa, who turns into a dragon (Sleeping Beauty), not one, but two princes (although only one of them is of actual royal blood), a damsel in distress and even a man in distress.

Enchanted is a very fun and romantic modern-day fairy-tale. If you like fairy-tales and a bit of fun and romance, I definitely recommend that you watch the movie.

You know, the trailer for this movie didn't interest me at all. But I eventually watched it for some reason, and I adored it! It was so much fun, and the scene in the pizza parlor just hit me wrong (or right?) and I laughed till I hurt. I don't know if I've ever laughed that hard at another movie!

I love this movie. It pokes fun at the genre while also managing to be a sweet story.
